For a spring 2021 planning situation, a couple might already be married while still planning a later gathering. The stationery should reflect the event honestly and warmly. An announcement shares news; an invitation asks someone to attend. Keeping those functions separate helps guests understand whether a reply is expected.

Use an announcement to share the marriage

An announcement can include your names, the marriage date and the location if you want to share it. It does not need a reply card or an implied request to make travel plans. A photograph or short personal message can make the piece feel complete without adding information about an event that is not yet arranged.

With joyful hearts, we’re happy to share that we were married on March 6. Thank you for the love and encouragement you have given us.

Use an invitation for a specific gathering

If you are inviting guests to a celebration, give the confirmed date, time and place, plus a clear reply method. “Celebrate with us” can be a lovely headline, but it needs practical details beneath it. If only some recipients are invited, do not use identical announcement wording that unintentionally suggests an open invitation.

Consider two separate mailings

Sending news now and a reception invitation later can be clearer than combining uncertain plans with a definite marriage announcement. Keep the visual style related if you would like the pieces to feel connected. The later invitation can explain that you are celebrating a marriage that has already taken place.

Before printing, decide what you want the recipient to do after reading. If the answer is “share our happiness,” an announcement may be enough. If it is “reserve the date and reply,” provide an actual invitation.
